We Need This for the Trip

There was a really cool article in Discovery News about new night vision technology, which will be a film that you can put on windshields, glasses, and camera phones. Which will take people like Tod and me and make us able to actually be able to see more like the rest of you. I like that.
If anyone is struggling for what to get me for my birthday .... : )

New Address for Donations

Apparently, the person who delivers mail to my building is also blind, (yay for overcoming) because half of the donations that have been mailed to me have been put in other people's mailboxes. (The same thing was happening to my Netflix DVDs) So I have changed the address for sending contributions.

If you have sent something by mail and you are not listed below, please let me know.

- Matt P (VA)

- Frank L (CA)

- Julia and Matt P (VA)

- Gail D (MA)

Also, if you are planning on sending a check or money order, please note that it needs to be made payable to Justin Purvis. This entire thing is a personal project for Tod and I, and while I have set up a second checking account for this trip, it is still just under my name. (My bank does not do business accounts) I am not sure they will allow me to deposit a check made out to Driving Blind.

We are still trying to lock down our documentarian, but we seem to gotten a Production Manager.

My good friend, Dot, has been helping me a lot with pre-production aspects. She is taken on the mantle of Production Manager (or title to be named later that she really wants), and has been so gung ho about this project. She is a plethora of energy, connections, ideas, and motivation. I am so excited to have her on board.

Hopefully she will be joining us on the trip as well. Give it up for freelance work leaving you room to travel.

Also, thank you so much to all the people still providing us with potential lodging, and places we 'have' to see. We are super jazzed about all the beauty we'll be taking in.

We're getting closer to locking down the new dates. Our first day on the road will be ending with a fundraiser in New York and so we are trying to figure out the best date for the most response.

Soon, very soon.

We're updating our route plan to incorporate some more stops.

- A Lakota Reservation to sweat with a Medicine Man, and get a glimpse of modern day reservation life.

- Little Niagara Falls. I can't say where it is or what it is actually called, but I am pretty excited. We can swim in it!

- The beach. Both east and west coast. So we can finally tell the world which ocean is better.

We are leaning more and more to taking a whole month to do this. And I think it will be worth it. Dates coming soon.

When Life Hands You Lemons

Mark, our documentarian, has had to, reluctantly, bow out of the project. At least, we have decided to move forward as if he is completely out of the picture.

Both Tod and I, and Mark, are really saddened by the turn of events. But yet, with the great responses from our emails and fans, we aren't left completely screwed. I will be talking with some other documentarian friends over the next few days. Fingers crossed that we'll be able to lock one down for the shoot.

eBlasts Work

We're getting a lot of response from the mass email we are sending out.

- People are starting to make donations through PayPal, and pledging donations.

- Another documentarian has expressed interest in working on the project as well. Very excited about that.

- People are talking about setting up fundraisers to help us out.

- We've got a guy with a T-Shirt press who is going to make some sweet shirts for us.

- People are coming out of the woodwork to help us with lodging on the trip.

- Even a little jealousy from friends who wish they had thought of this first.

I am constantly amazed at the beauty of friendship, of humankind. I could never have expected this kind of response from people. You are all so wonderful.

Fundraising Idea

We are thinking about fun ways to help us raise money for the trip. One idea we have is to auction off a "ride along" - We will make a life size photo cut out of the winner and take it with us on the trip, taking pictures of it with us in all the great places we visits and friends we make along the way.

Another idea would be to auction off a phone call or series of phone calls during the trip. We would call the winner while on the road and regale them with our exploits and get advice from them, a la Life Line on Millionaire.

Sounds like a good ideas, yeah?

Little Snags?

I was finally able to sit down with my friend and potential documentarian, Mark. As it stands right now, he is a very high percentage not going to be able to do this. We're hoping for a miracle. He is going to do a big talk with his work on Monday, and try and get that miracle working.

We do have some options, if he should end up being 100% out -

- Find another documentarian who has the "vision" we need to get this project done, and can do it, well basically, for free*.

- We may push the entire trip back by a month, leaving in August. Mark says he can totally make that happen, no problem. And we could take longer to do this trip and really hit the sights. If we choose this option, we lose the Choroideremia Conference in Seattle.

There are other options as well, and in the next few days, we will be more set with what we will need to do.

*We will be taking care of the person while we are on the trip, but really can't afford to pay anyone more than that. Unless we raise a fair amount of money. Here's to that!

Updates

We may have found places to stay for two of our stops. Peru, Maine and Rochester, NY.

Austin show is getting itself locked down. Asaf Ronen, who is partnered with The Institution Theater, told me that he may be able to get us a 150 seat theater for the show, for free, and he and The Institution Theater will be the sponsors of the show.

We have a potential second camera man, in a mutual friend of my brother and I: Nick Urban.

And just a note, our travel plans are not set in stone, at least no ALL of them. If you know someone who lives near one of our stops, and they would be willing to put us up (potentially 5 people total), we would be happy to detour a bit for friends and family.
We set up a Facebook Page, please check it out and become a fan. That way you'll get double the info.
